Buying a Used LML Duramax

by The Diesel Podcast

With the price of new diesel trucks skyrocketing, there is a resurgence in older (but still newer) diesel trucks. One of the most popular trucks on the road is the LML Duramax, covering model years 2011-16. Is it right for you?

The LML is a diesel engine manufactured by General Motors for use in their heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans. It was introduced in 2011 and replaced the LMM Duramax. The engine has a displacement of 6.6 liters and is capable of producing up to 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque. It features a high-pressure common rail fuel injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger for improved efficiency and power.

In addition to its power and performance, the LML Duramax is also known for its durability and reliability, making it a popular choice among those who need a tough and dependable truck for heavy-duty work. The LML is still in use today in some GM heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans, although it has been replaced in newer models by the L5P Duramax.

What can go wrong on these trucks? While the truck as a whole is solid, the CP4 injection pump has proven problematic. The pump itself and lack of lubricity in modern U.S. diesel fuel contribute to this problem. However, aftermarket companies have stepped up with 50-state legal CP3 conversions for the engine. These kits require no additional upgrades and deliver the reliability of the CP3 from 2001-2010 Duramax trucks, into the 2011-16 Duramax.

Front suspension components were upgraded from previous years. While not “bulletproof” they have proven stronger and more rugged for serious heavy duty truck use. In the even there is a suspension failure, a plethora of aftermarket companies offer tie rod ends, centerlinks, and other suspension components to shore up the failure points.

If you are a GM fan and want the nicer creature comforts of a modern truck, the LML Duramax could be the one for you.
