Duramax TCM’s, Cummins Turbos & 10 Speed Powerstrokes

by The Diesel Podcast

We recently had Clint Cannon from ATS Diesel Performance on the podcast to discuss a variety of new technology in diesel. This action-packed episode covered everything from turbos, electronics, transmission control, and tons more. During this conversation, a few revolutionary innovations stood out that will make enthusiasts rejoice.

One challenge has been Duramax TCM’s, or the lack thereof, and an insanely overpriced used market. Used TCM’s are going for $6,000+ because of a lack of supply. If a truck is down, that costs even more money, coupled with the frustration of a truck that is inoperable. ATS Diesel has a new product launching to fill this gap, at a much lower price point. In discussing this new product, they gave us an insight into how technology advancements are bringing diesel into current times. For years, the ideas were there, but the technology wasn’t and innovation was at a standstill. That’s no longer the case.

Turbo technology is another leap forward in the diesel aftermarket. When the 6.7L Cummins first came out, the built-in exhaust brake and variable geometry turbo offered huge benefits over the fixed turbos of previous models. The idea began circulating, is it possible to put a new VGT on a 5.9L Cummins and have a built-in exhaust brake and quicker spool? Again, technology wasn’t there and the idea never took off. With today’s tools, it is, and 2003-07 5.9L Cummins trucks will have the option for aftermarket turbos that do just that. The best part? It makes the truck more usable to the owner and synchronizes with the truck for a seamless install.

ATS Diesel also mentioned the lead forward with transmission upgrades. As the Big 3 added more gears for fuel economy, power over stock quickly eclipsed what the transmissions could hold (especially 68RFE’s). And the old ways of adding clutches, line pressure and billet parts didn’t work with the electronic controls of a modern diesel truck. ATS’ Co-Pilot solves this issue with precise transmission control to enhance upgrades such as billet parts, better clutch packs, increased hydraulic pressure, etc.

These technological jumps are making diesel performance relevant (and attainable) again. Aftermarket products are no longer spliced together and counterintuitive. Instead, they are seamlessly integrated with the electronics and trucks themselves. This results in cleaner installs, less headaches, faster turnaround times at shops and a better customer service experience.
